The Chief/HNDGS, General (HAF) Ioannis Giagkos attended a meeting in Doha, on Monday August 29, 2011, following an invitation from the Commander-in-Chief of Qatar Armed Forces. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss issues concerning the operations in Libya, following the recent developments, as well as the perspective on the security conditions in the broader region.
The conference was attended, apart from the CHODs of the nations participating in Operation Unified Protector, by the Commander JFC Naples, the Chairman of the National Transitional Council of Libya, Mahmoud Jibril, the Minister of Defence and a representative of the revolutionaries.
During the meeting views were exchanged on the requirements for the establishment of security and stability conditions in Libya, as well as the smooth transition to a new government.
The Chief /HNDGS having underlined the important contribution of Greece in the operation with assets and facilities, stated that Greece is willing to continue the provision of support during the critical new phase of the transitional process for the benefit of Libya and the peace and stability of the broader region.
He also underlined the geographical importance of the island of Crete and suggested its promotion to a hub for the accumulation and transfer of humanitarian aid and development programmes for Libya.
Concluding, the Chief/HNDGS referred to the advanced know-how and the capabilities of Hellenic construction companies and the importance of the Multinational Strategic Sea-lift Coordination Center in the field of assets and materiel transportation to and from Libya.
