The Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Admiral James Stavridis met in Athens with the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General HAF loannis Giagkos.
The two day visit, on the invitation of the Greek CHOD, was mainly focused on issues of common interest in the context of NATO. During the meeting at the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, the two officials had the opportunity to exchange views on the opportunities for the Alliance in 2010, including NATO’s reform process, the new strategic concept and the evolution of ongoing operations.
Concluding the meeting, General HAF loannis Giagkos reaffirmed the already strong bonds of Greece with the Alliance, based on shared common values and their strong commitment to a collective security to the wider world.
Responding, SACEUR declared: “I want to thank Greece for its contribution to NATO operations. You have been a devoted ally in Afghanistan and Kosovo. Your troops are doing fine work at the airfield in Kabul, as well as your engineers. You have been with us in Kosovo from the beginning, and I must compliment the Greek Navy for their valuable contributions at sea.”
Besides, SACEUR had an official call with Defence Minister Mr. Evangelos Venizelos, to discuss Hellenic defence policy issues.
