From 16 to 17 October 2016, the HNDGS Chief, Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis HN visited Washington DC, following an invitation extended to by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph F. Dunford US Marine Corps, to attend the Chiefs of Defence Counter Violent Extremist Organizations Conference.
During the meeting, attended by the CHODs or their representatives from 43 countries-worldwide and Commanders of US Strategic Commands, the following topics were discussed:
- The overall assessment of the current terrorism status, as well as the transregional nature of the security challenges, worldwide, focusing on the financing resources of the terrorist organizations.
- The interaction of international organizations, third countries and other international actors in encountering terrorism.
- The current operations, worldwide, dealing with the aforementioned challenges and the development of future ones, focusing on the capability of strengthening the existing or developing new military co operations, particularly in the crucial field of information-intelligence exchange.
The HNDGS Chief stressed the necessity, in dealing effectively with terrorism, of putting an end to the conflicts and instability that stretches from North Africa to Middle East, as well as cutting off the excessive refugee flows. Furthermore, he noticed that reliable and constructive cooperation among countries and International Organizations, in the domains of coordination, intelligence sharing and cyber-warfare, is required.
On the sidelines of the conference, the HNDGS Chief met with all his counterparts as well as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and with the Supreme Allied Commander Europe-SACEUR and US European Command-EUCOM, General Curtis M. Scaparroti.
On Tuesday 18 October 2016, the HNDGS Chief will meet with the Ambassador of Greece, Mr. Ηaris Lalacos and the Greek military personnel serving in Washington DC.
